Rabat – The first edition of the Parliamentary Economic Forum for the Euro-Mediterranean and Gulf region (CGEM) is being held from December 7-8 in Marrakech. The forum aims to turn challenges into opportunities that face the Euro-Mediterranean and Gulf region.
The Mediterranean has been heavily affected by climate change.
As part of its bid to achieve 52% of its energy needs domestically, Morocco has considerably invested in renewable energies and green energy like hydrogen over the past five years. But the country still needs assistance from its international development partners to meet its ambitious clean energy goals.
Head of Morocco’s General of Enterprises Youssef Alaoui, highlighted that this year’s forum seeks to promote the need for stronger cooperation between countries in the Gulf and Euro-Mediterranean regions.
Speaking at the forum, Alaoui said that the Euro-Med and Gulf regions have a lot of economic potential, but they face similar problems with climate change, food security, water stress, and being too dependent on natural resources.
The CGEM official also stressed the importance of social dialogue between the government and the private sector to develop the local ecosystem like the”industrial hubs” and build local capacity.
In addition, he highlighted Morocco’s efforts over the years to ease business and develop local infrastructure, such as its new development plan to achieve sustainable and inclusive economic development.
The meeting prioritises the strategic partnership between the Euro-Mediterranean and Gulf regions as an important cooperation.
Alaoui also spoke of the importance of the EU-Morocco relationship and Morocco’s geographical proximity to Europe, which makes the country a solid commercial partner of the EU south of the Mediterranean.
He concluded by noting that the CGEM represents the interests of Morocco’s private sector in EU institutions, especially in Brussels, to make Morocco a favoured destination for investors.
