Rabat – Following a three-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Morocco’s capital Rabat will host the 47th edition of the Hassan II Golf Trophy and the 26th edition of the Lalla Meryem Cup at the Royal Golf Dar Es Salam from February 06 to 11.
The Hassan II Trophy will feature the PGA Tour Champions which hosts world-class professional players.
According to Hassan II Golf Trophy Association’ statement, Scottish professional golfer Colin Montgomerie, Spanish golfer Jose Maria Olazabal, German golfer Bernhard Langer are among the 66 professional golfers participating in the prestigious competition.
PGA Tour Champions president Miller Brady told PGA Tour, “The 2023 schedule sees our Tour returning to Morocco with the Trophy Hassan II in Rabat.”
“We are thrilled to have the highest purses in PGA TOUR Champions history and to be able to bring the game of golf to the many wonderful venues on this Tour,” he continued.
Meanwhile, the Lalla Meryem Cup, a tournament on the Ladies European Tour (LET), will bring together the global elite of women’s golf.
The tournament will see the participation of 96 players, including Ines Laklalech, the first Moroccan and Arab golfer to become a member of the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) and to win the ladies’ European tour.
Her fellow Moroccan professional golfers Maha Haddioui and Malak Bouraeda will also participate in the competition, according to the association’ statement.
“The Royal Moroccan Golf Federation and the Hassan II Golf Trophy Association put great effort into making these events successful, demonstrating their desire to advance the development of Moroccan golf as a sport and culture,” concluded the statement.
This year’s tournament at Royal Golf Dar Es Salam marks a historic and significant step in Morocco’s golf calendar as the event was postponed for three years due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
