Rabat – Portugal newly appointed head coach Jorge Jesus has ended speculation over Cristiano Ronaldo’s international future, insisting that the veteran forward will only be selected if he meets the same standards as every other player.
Speaking at his first press conference since succeeding Roberto MartÃnez as Portugal manager, Jesus dismissed suggestions that Ronaldo could become a problem for the national team.
“Cristiano will never be a problem for the national team, nor for me,” he said. “People can have their own opinions about what he represents as a player and the debate surrounding him.”
The Portuguese coach stressed that Ronaldo would not receive special treatment when squad decisions are made.
“When the time comes to make decisions, I will speak with Cristiano, but I won’t speak only with him. I will speak individually with every player, so I won’t talk to Cristiano simply because he is Cristiano,” Jesus explained.
He also praised the 41-year-old’s legacy, describing him as one of the greatest figures in Portuguese football history.
“Ronaldo is a symbol of Portuguese football, the national team, and Portugal itself. That will always remain part of history. It was a great privilege to work with him last year,” he said.
“As long as I understand what he is capable of and he understands what I expect from him, our relationship as coach and player will be straightforward. The decision about his future is something we will discuss together.” He added
The Portugal coach also revealed that Ronaldo still intends to finish his playing career with Saudi Pro League side Al Nassr, saying: “I know he wants to continue playing for Al Nassr. We spent a year together, and he always told me, ‘I will finish my career at Al Nassr,'” Jesus said.
Concluding his remarks, Jesus made it clear that Ronaldo’s place in the Portugal squad will depend on merit.
