Rabat – The military headquarters of the General Staff of the South Zone in Morocco’s Agadir hosted the planning meeting of the 2023 African Lion military exercise between January 9 and 20, 2023.
The meeting sought to ensure that this year’s African Lion exercise is well-coordinated and executed. Representatives from Morocco’s Royal Armed Forces (FAR) and the United States Armed Forces attended the session.
The planning process included identifying the various activities of this year’s African Lion exercise, as well as the sites where they will take place, indicated a statement from FAR’s General Staff, as quoted by the Morocco News Agency (MAP).
The 2023 military event will feature various joint exercises, including land, airborne, maritime, Special Forces, and civil-military action operations, added the statement.
The military exercise is also set to feature a CBRN – Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear – decontamination operation, in which protective measures are taken in situations of CBRN hazards.
The Moroccan and American sides have also established the details of the musical show that will be held on the sidelines of the military exercise, featuring the FAR and the 23rd Utah State Army bands.

The statement noted that the joint musical performance is part of the celebrations of the 20th anniversary of bilateral cooperation between Morocco’s FAR and the Utah State National Guard.
The event is scheduled to take place between May 22 and June 16, in the Moroccan regions of Kenitra, Agadir, Tiznit, Tantan, Ben Guerir, Mehbes, and Tifnit. Besides Morocco, other host countries include Djibouti, Ghana, Senegal, and Tunisia.
Morocco has been hosting the African military exercise for a total of 18 years.
“While Morocco anchors the exercise, the other nations, known as spokes, continue to increase their size and contribution to the overall exercise,” the US Army Southern European Task Force in Africa (SETAF-AF) website indicated.
The website added that the annual exercise “provides unmatched opportunities for participation and cooperation on the African continent.”
