Rabat – Moroccan karate champion Chaimae El-Hayti won the bronze medal at the World Karate Championship in 50 kilograms category in Cairo, Egypt.
El-Hayti won the bronze medal after knocking Ukrainian component Kriva Katrina out of the competition on Sunday. Katrina ranked 12th in the world, scoring 2-1.
El-Hayti dominated her group in the first round of the championship, defeating Egyptian, Algerian, and Italian rivals. The Moroccan champion currently ranks 21st in the world and is the champion of the Islamic games.
Following a series of victories, El-Hayti lost in the quarter-finals to Venezuelan Yorgelis Salazar, who is first in the world. Then, played for the bronze medal against her Ukrainian counterpart.
Morocco was well represented at the World Karate Championship with five athletes competing. The list included Mehdi Sriti in the men’s, 84 kilograms category, Said Obaya in the 67 kilograms, men’s category, and Chaimae El-Hayti in the 50 kilograms women’s category. In the Kata category, the country was represented by Sanaa Agalmam and Aya En-Nesyry.
El-Hayti is no stranger to international acclaim, she won the gold medal in the women’s 50-kilogram category at the 2021 Islamic Solidarity Games held in Konya, Turkiye.
Her recent achievement also includes a bronze medal in the same category at the 2022 Mediterranean Games that took place in Oran, Algeria.
