Rabat – Inspector General of Morocco’s Royal Armed Forces (FAR) Belkhir El Farouk received on Tuesday Fructueux Gbaguidi, Chief of General Staff of Benin’s Armed Forces in Rabat.
The pair discussed bilateral cooperation between the two countries’ armies, a press release from the Moroccan armed forces said.
They also lauded “the ties of friendship, active solidarity, and mutual trust that bind the Kingdom of Morocco and the Republic of Benin,” said Morocco’s Press Agency (MAP).
Cooperation between the two armies is focused on Beninese soldiers receiving training in FAR schools and facilities. The training includes both initial training for new soldiers and training for higher military education.
The two officials expressed satisfaction during the meeting with the existing cooperation and its expansion to other areas, reiterating intentions to promote the ties and develop them further.
In 2020, Benin supported Morocco through its operation to counter Polisario maneuvers in Guerguerat. The country also expressed support for the UN-led political process and attended a virtual conference on Morocco’s Autonomy Plan for Western Sahara.
The event was followed by a meeting between the two countries’ foreign ministers in 2021 to reinforce relations in all sectors.
In 2021, Morocco’s King Mohammed VI also congratulated Benin’s President Patrice Talon on his re-election.
