Rabat – Moroccan athlete Abdelati El Guesse won the men’s 800 meter race at the 2023 Meeting National Indoor Lyon, which was held last weekend at France’s Stephane Diagana Athletics Hall.
The Moroccan runner finished the race in one minute, 46 seconds, and 36 milliseconds, surpassing Tunisia’s Abdessalem Ayouni who finished in one minute, 46 seconds, and 74 milliseconds.
Closely followed by Britain’s Guy Learmonth finished third in one minute, 46 seconds, and 84 milliseconds, while France’s Hugo Houyez finished fourth in one minute, 48 seconds, and 15 milliseconds.
With his performance, the Moroccan athlete has met the criteria for participating in the World Athletics Indoor Championship, which will be held in Nanjing, China, in 2025.
The World Athletics Indoor Championships Nanjing was scheduled for 17-19 March 2023, but was postponed due to the pandemic and is now scheduled for March 2025.
Moroccan runner and Olympic champion Soufiane El Bakkali has also achieved a sporting milestone after he was named Africa’s best male athlete of 2022.
Selected by The Confederation of African Athletics in December 2022. The Moroccan runner triumphed over Kenya’s long-distance runner Eliud Kipchoge and middle-distance runner Emmanuel Korir.
El Bakkali is the first Moroccan to bring home a gold medal in the 3,000-meter steeplechase competition.
