Rabat – Moroccan scientist Rachid Yazami explained that Morocco should capitalize on scientific research to develop sustainable solutions to water scarcity in the country.
Speaking to Morocco World News at the “Industry Mornings” event held in Casablanca, Yazami stressed the importance of the field of water management as central to human survival.
“Naturally, before we reach technology we need scientific research, and to identify the problems,” the scientist said. “When we identify the problems we can try to find a solution for them.”
After a solution is identified, technology can be used to create a commercial product that can benefit Morocco and its people, Yazami detailed.
“There is a relationship between water and energy. If we want more potable water, we need energy to prepare and store it,” he added, recalling that his own work centers around storing energy and Lithium batteries.
Morocco’s advancement in renewables and energy storage capabilities prepares the country to work on storing water for drinking and farming purposes.
He continued to emphasize that the field of water management is related to other sectors of energy and environmentalism.
Yazami also appealed for measures to encourage more economical use of water, to invest in all the different fields required to solve the water scarcity problems, and to raise awareness of the issue in the school system.
Morocco recently suffered from its worst drought in decades, affecting the country’s agricultural output and food security.
The “Industry Mornings” event was held under the theme “Water Industry: Urgent and Future Challenges,” and brought together policymakers, business leaders, and officials related to the industry to discuss the future of the industry.
Agriculture is an important chunk of Morocco’s economy. Water scarcity will be one of the most pressing issues for the country to deal with, especially as climate change continues to make precipitation unpredictable.
