Rabat – The Hassan II Foundation for Moroccans living abroad (MREs) hosted Moroccan artist Amine Asselman’s exhibition “From Zellige to Infinity” at Rabat’s cultural center (Espace Rivage) on January 19.
The exhibition featured the artist’s works from the last ten years as well as a new geometric and artistic perspective on zellige, the organizers explained in a press release.
“For Amine Asselman, zellige represents a geometric game with connotations that are related to his identity and the place where he grew up,” said the organizers.

Speaking to Morocco World News (MWN) on the sidelines of the exhibition, the artist said, “This is my first solo exhibition in Morocco, where I was able to showcase my work on zellige over the course of ten years, the development of zellige’s geometry, and how I transformed musical sounds into zellige compositions.”
A marriage of Andalusian Music, Poetry, and Zellige
Asselman experiments with the fusion of Zellige’s geometric compositions in the architecture of the Iberian Peninsula and the Maghreb with Andalusian music and classical Arabic poetry.
He has created a new language he calls MUSAIC and wishes to visually translate musical sounds in the form of Zellige.

According to the artist’s website, much of his artistic research focuses on the geometric mosaics of the Zellige, which has led him to develop new fields of contemporary creation.
Asselman’s love of music inspired him to transform sounds into geometric compositions, attempting to bridge the gap between two artistic disciplines that share many structural elements.
Born in 1989 in Toulouse, Asselman is a multidisciplinary award-winning artist who has presented several solo and group exhibitions in different galleries, institutions and international fairs. He lives and works between Tetouan in Morocco and Pontevedra in Spain.
Amine Asselman holds a master’s degree and a doctorate in creation and research in contemporary art from the University of Vigo. He is also a graduate of Tetouan’s National Institute of Fine Arts with previous training in architecture.
