Rabat – Playing with Morocco’s national football team is a source of “strength and pride,” Hakim Ziyech said on Tuesday to Dutch media.
Speaking about his participation in the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, the Moroccan striker expressed his deep attachment to his homeland and how he takes pride in representing Morocco.
“My presence in the national team of Morocco means everything to me! It gives me pride and a sense of power,” Ziyech explained. “Since we qualified for the World Cup, pride is the predominant feeling.”
Describing his experience at the World Cup, Ziyech recalled his deep respect for his country’s national anthem, emphasizing that hearing it played in the background ahead of every match was a sacred moment.
“When the national anthem is played, I put my hand on my heart, I stand up straight and I put my head down, to be fully concentrated and feel its effect on me,” he explained. “Sometimes I forget myself while listening to it.”
Responding to a question on whether he is the star of the team, the Chelsey winger said: “No, I am not the big star in the Moroccan national team! I fulfill my mission on the pitch; I try to give the best of myself and to make my country proud of me.”
Ziyech returned to play for Morocco’s national team when Walid Regragui took over the position of the team’s manager. Ziyech was absent from the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations, Hakim Ziyech following a feud with the unpopular former coach Vahid Halilovic.
