Rabat – Moroccan footballer Samy Mmaee took to Instagram to deny what he described as “rumors” alleging that he and his brother Ryan refused to play for Morocco’s national team.
“Since this morning, a false rumor has been circulating that alleged that Ryan and I had refused to talk with coach Walid and refused to represent the Moroccan national team in the future,” the athlete said in a communique posted on his Instagram story.
“We would like to clarify that these are pure lies peddled by several media that I will not cite, they know themselves,” he added.
The pair clarified that they had not been contacted by the national team’s coach or the federation since their last call-up for the team in September 2022, but that they were at “the entire disposition” of the national team and the coach.
“This is not the first time that they have tried to tarnish our image and that is unacceptable,” the statement from the brothers said. “Peddling such a rumor without verifying the information is incomprehensible.”
Rumors had been circulating that the two players refused to talk with national team head coach Walid Regragui but the footballers pointed out they had always been present when contacted and had never refused to play for the team.
Samy and Ryan Mmaee play for Hungarian top-flight club Ferencvarosi. Samy plays as a center-back, while Ryan is a forward who has scored 16 goals over 25 appearances so far for the club.
The brothers were born in Belgium. While they represented the Belgian national team at youth level, they have chosen to play for Morocco instead in their senior international careers.
