Rabat – The Green & Smart Building Park, which is a collaboration between several research institutions and international actors in green energy, including the Mohammed VI Polytechnic University (UM6P), has opened in the Moroccan city of Benguerir.

Funded by UM6P, the Research Institute for Solar Energy and New Energies (IRESEN), and the Korean International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), the platform is dedicated to research and development in the fields of green buildings, energy efficiency, electric mobility, and smart grids.

With an investment of around $23.5 million, the project aims to contribute to the development of the Moroccan and African sustainable cities of the future. The platform will achieve its goal by developing environment-friendly buildings which run on renewable energy.

The GSBP “aims to create the ecosystem required in the development of the sustainable Moroccan and African city” using renewable energy and digitization in building, said a press release.

Mustapha Zaazoua, director of the Green and Smart Building Park, expects the inauguration of the project to strengthen the university’s involvement in creating sustainable, smart cities, as well as integrating smart solutions and systems that align with the Moroccan and African context.

For his part, UM6P President Hicham El Habti said that the project offers researchers and academics the opportunity to develop innovative products and services for the Moroccan and African sustainable city of tomorrow.

Meanwhile, KOICA Vice President Hong Seok-hwa highlighted that the project will have the potential to address climate change issues and develop environmental solutions. This would support the efforts made by the Moroccan government in regard to reducing carbon dioxide and committing to renewable energy use and energy efficiency, Seok-hwa added.

The inauguration ceremony saw the presence of the Korean Ambassador to Morocco Keeyong Chung, another opportunity to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between Morocco and Korea.
