Rabat – The number of Moroccans who lost their lives in the disastrous earthquake in Turkiye has risen to 20 as of Tuesday, according to the Moroccan embassy in Ankara.
In addition, 33 Moroccan nationals are still unaccounted for, while 154 members of the Moroccan diaspora have survived the disaster, with 16 of those victims receiving treatment for injuries in hospitals.
The powerful earthquake, which struck southern Turkiye and northern Syria in early February, claimed the lives of more than 50,000 victims, the majority of which were in Turkiye.
The disaster was immediately met with aid offers from around the world, as the EU, US, and UK all sent rescue forces and reinforcements.
In addition, Morocco’s embassies in Ankara and Damascus mobilized operations to help members of the Moroccan diaspora and their family members who might have any questions.
The embassy in Ankara also called on Moroccans to get in contact and provide information about any missing relatives.
Since the initial quake, several other tremors have occurred, adding to the suffering of people in the region as buildings continue to collapse.
The UN believes that the regions Harim, Afrin, and Jebel Saman in northwest Syria were the most affected areas, with over 50 aid trucks from five UN agencies arriving so far.
