Rabat – Four Moroccan referees Jalal Jayed, Fatiha Jermoumi, Bouchra Karboubi, and Soukaina Hamdi are set to officiate at the TotalEnergies U20 Africa Cup of Nations, in Egypt.
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) selected the four renowned Moroccan referees to oversee the tournament which is taking place between February 19 and 11 March.
CAF’s list of appointed match officials features Jalal Jayed and Bouchra Karboubi as the main referees while Fatiha Jermoumi and Soukaina Hamdi were named as the assistant referees.
The 40 match officials chosen represent 30 countries. CAF selected younger match officials, reflecting the organization’s commitment to developing world-class future referees in Africa.
CAF has also included African match officials who have been selected for FIFA global events to use the competition as “a preparation phase” before their assignments.
“We are fully committed to changing the image of refereeing on the continent and for that we are banking on the youth. In this group we have the future of Africa,” Head of CAF’s Refereeing Department, Desire Noumandiez Doue said.
The three Moroccan female referees Karboubi, Hamdi, and Jermoumi were also selected by FIFA to officiate at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup which is expected to take place between July 20 and August 20 in Australia and New Zealand.
Karboubi rose to prominence in 2022 when she became the first female referee to officiate the final match of Morocco’s Throne Cup.
Additionally, Karboubi became the first female referee to oversee a match in Morocco’s top-tier professional football league, the Botola Pro 1 in 2020.
