Five Places to Visit in Morocco’s Forgotten City of Taroudant

Rabat – Taroudant, dubbed “The little Marrakech,” is a small city located in southwest Morocco. As one of the oldest cities in Morocco, its foundation dates back to the pre-Islamic period, according to some researchers, although others believe it stems from the Roman occupation. It is about 83 kilometers East of Agadir, 274 kilometers West of Ouarzazate, and 268 kilometers South of Marrakech.

As a smaller version of Marrakech, Taroudant shares similar historical features, even in the local’s accents. However, the small city’s infrastructure lacks care and development. There, one may notice vast deserted lands and derelict parks that also have the tendency to make the city a cornerstone neighboring major tourist destinations, namely Agadir, Marrakech, and Ouarzazate.

From behind its historical landmarks, like the city walls, Taroudant has five hidden gems worth discovering.

The City Walls

Taroudant’s authentic walls are one of its rare features as they are accessible to climb. These walls surround the entire city and are visible as one approaches the entry. The summit offers a beautiful view of the unmissable sunset. One can climb the stairs alongside Bab Kasbah’s entrance without paying a fee. Outside the city wall, there is Sahat 20 Ghoucht (20 August Square). Here you can find a large area with a fountain in the middle, where the residents can bask in the sun.

Three different souks

Taroudant has three different souks [markets] to explore one of which is home to artisanal products where craftwork can be found such as pottery, rugs, tanners (leather artisans), jewelers, and metal craft among others. Alternatively, there is the traditional souk; the place for clothing stores, drugstores, and bazaars.

The prime times to visit are from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. or later on in the day from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. One can have lunch among the hustle and bustle of the souk to make a change from restaurant dining. On Sunday there is a special weekly souk with herbs and plants, spices, piles of fruit and vegetables, and second-hand goods all sold there.

El Warda Hotel

This is a budget-friendly hotel located in the middle of a traditional souk. El Warda costs about MAD 50 ($1.36) per night, the reception is good, the personnel are friendly, and it is surprisingly clean given the price point. The rooms are well-painted and tidy, the bed is large enough for one person, and the bathroom is set with hot water. This is without forgetting the relaxing lounge by the reception desk.

Restaurant in El Kasbah

Within the Kasbah there is a restaurant area called Complexe El Kasbah, it is a beautiful oasis overlooking the Atlas mountains and the palm trees. The restaurant’s food is regarded as some of the best in Taroudant including Tajines, pizzas, snacks, grilled meat, salads, and drinks. The personnel are smartly dressed, and friendly, with impeccable service. The restaurant is environmentally friendly, supplied with electricity and wifi from a solar energy station; the prices are affordable considering the high-quality experience.

Brahim Roudani Garden

Brahim Roudani garden is near the 20 Ghoucht square surrounded by palm trees with a fountain extending along its path. One can use the humpback bridge over the fountain to get to the other side of the garden. There is a playground next to the garden for children and adults. The place is serene for strolling or even studying.

Taroudant as a future tourist landmark

Taroudant, indeed, still has more to offer. Bike rent, for instance, exists in this city to take a tour around without having to walk or pay for a taxi. Home to Toubkal mountain, the highest peak in the Atlas, is located between Taroudant and Marrakech near Imlil, a village in the high Atlas mountains. Trips are also arranged to beautiful towns and villages located on the outskirts of the city such as Tiout.

Taroudant enjoys a strategic position that could make it the number one tourist competitor for well-known landmarks in the country.
