Rabat – Astronomers believe that Morocco will celebrate the first day of Ramadan 2023 on Thursday, March 23.

Renowned Moroccan astronomer Aziz Khattabi confirmed the date for the holy month of Ramadan as March 2023.

Several other astronomers confirmed the same date in statements quoted by converging reports.

The astronomy experts believe that the crescent moon sighting will be possible on Wednesday, March 22.

The Moroccan Ministry of Islamic Ministry assigns several credible religious and astronomy experts who sight the crescent to confirm the date of Ramadan annually.

In 2022, astronomy researcher Said Benayad said Morocco is the best Arab-Muslim country in terms of crescent moon observation, describing the country’s approach to confirm the crescent moon visibilities’ “as correct.”

Ramadan is the ninth month in the Islamic calendar. The religious period lasts for 29 or 30 days depending on the moon sighting.

During the holy month, Muslims fast from dawn to sunset, abstaining from drinking any liquid, smoking, eating food, chewing gum, or engaging in any sexual activity during the fasting hours.

Taking medication is also prohibited during fasting hours. Only people with chronic diseases and prescriptions from doctors are exempt.

Children are only encouraged to fast once they reach puberty.

Last year, Morocco celebrated Ramadan on April 3.
