Rabat – The International Federation of Football History & Statistics (IFFHS) has named Morocco’s AS FAR the second-best women’s club in Africa for the year 2022.

AS FAR received a total of 152 points, while first-place holders South Africa’s Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies claimed 174 points.

The Rabat-based club was followed by Nigeria’s Bayelsa Queens (142 points), Ghana’s Ampem Darkoa Ladies (128), and Tanzania’s Simba Queens  (113).

The federation indicated that the ranking was based on the performance of the clubs in both international and national competitions in the last 12 months.

Described as the “radiant face of women’s football in Morocco” by the Confederation of African Football (CAF), AS FAR has achieved outstanding results in 2022, for which they received widespread praise.

The Moroccan club won CAF Women’s Champions League in November last year after defeating South Africa’s Mamelodi Sundowns 4-0.

King Mohammed VI celebrated AS FAR’s victory and congratulated the team for their strong performance. The monarch held a phone call with the club’s coach Mohamed Amine Alioua and Captain Aziza Rabbah, extending his congratulatory message for the win.

Moroccan player Fatima Tagnaout, who scored one of AF FAR’s goals during the tournament’s final, played a fundamental role in helping her team secure its first title in the African sporting event.

Following the Women’s Champions League finals, the African Football Confederation (CAF) named Tagnaout the best player of the tournament. The Moroccan player also shone during the 2022 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

On a national level, the club has won the Moroccan Women’s Championship nine times and the Moroccan Women’s Throne Cup eight times.

Women’s football has seen a notable improvement in recent years, including in Morocco. The Moroccan national football team has qualified for the Women’s World Cup, which will take place in Australia and New Zealand next year.
