Rabat – Morocco has joined a growing list of countries that have condemned the outrageous Quran burning by extremists in Copenhagen, Denmark.
A statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that Morocco has condemned “in the strongest terms” the burning of a copy of the Quran.
“Although this heinous act was committed in front of the diplomatic representation of another Muslim country, the Kingdom of Morocco considers it a provocative act,” the ministry said.
Morocco also urged Danish authorities to intervene and to apply the law firmly against people in charge of the “irresponsible incendiary acts.”
Far-right and anti-Muslim group Patrioterne Gar Live burnt a copy of the Quran as well as a Turkish flag in front of the Turkish embassy in Copenhagen on Friday.
The act triggered outrage and frustration among Muslims as well as a list of countries that described the act as a heinous and serious provocation against over two billion Muslims worldwide.
Qatar’s Foreign Affairs Ministry warned that such repeated violations towards Islam under the “pretext of freedom of expression” fuels violence and hatred.
“The ministry reiterates Qatar’s full support for the values of tolerance and coexistence, and its keenness to establish the principles of international peace and security through dialogue and understanding,” the ministry added.
For its part, Turkiye described the act as “vile,” urging authorities to take immediate action against the perpetrators.
Jordan and Saudi Arabia, among many other countries, shared the same sentiment, describing the act as one that incites racist provocation against Muslims.
This is not the first time a far-right group has triggered worldwide outrage following similar heinous attacks against Muslims.
One of the latest acts was in January when Swedish extremists burned a copy of the Quran in Stockholm in front of the Turkish embassy.
