Rabat – Morocco is a regional leader in soft power; the latest index showed that Morocco ranked ahead of all North African countries, and placed among the top three in Africa, according to a news report from British consultancy Brand Finance.

Soft power measures a country’s political influence. The annual Global Soft Power ranking featured Morocco in 66th place internally on a list of 121 countries. In Africa, the country ranked among the top three with Egypt and South Africa.

Despite the impressive ranking, the country fell by nine places compared to the same ranking in 2022.

The Global Soft Power Index comprises data on business and trade, governance, international relations, and culture and traditions, on its list consisting of eight pillars.

With a score of 39, Morocco’s “net influence” according to the report stood at 22%, down from 24% a year earlier.

Despite the overall drop in the ranking, Morocco’s performance on the eight pillars of the ranking improved notably. On the cultural front, Morocco seems to be highly influential, as it ranks 36th globally in the sub-index of cultural heritage, up from the 52nd place in 2022.

Morocco’s ranking on international relations also improved, with the country jumping from 62nd place in 2022 to 53rd place within the space of a year. And while previously Morocco was unaccounted for in the sub-index of sustainable future, the country now ranks in 86th place, reflecting the country’s ambitious green energy, and sustainability agenda.

In the sub-index of media and communication, Morocco saw the biggest drop in the ranking, moving down from 71st place last year to 89th in 2023.
