Rabat – Singapore is expected to announce Thursday, March 23 as the first day of Ramadan 2023, according to the Islamic Religious Council of Singapore (Muis).
The religious council stressed that Singapore is yet to confirm the official date of this year’s Ramadan depending on the crescent moon sighting.
“You can look forward to the Ramadan announcement by Mufti of Singapore, Dr Nazirudin Mohd Nasir on Muis Facebook and Instagram, as well as SalamSG TV YouTube,” the Religious Council detailed in its statement.
As part of the resumption of religious activities with the easing of restrictions after the pandemic, Muis announced that this year, bookings are not required for taraweeh prayer at 57 mosques.
Taraweeh prayers will be carried out at 67 mosques, with a total of 98,550 spaces available. Meanwhile, bookings are only available in 10 mosques where demand is high and space is limited.
Muslims refrain from eating and drinking from dawn to dusk for 29 to 30 days throughout the month of Ramadan, depending on the sighting of the crescent moon.
According to a 2021 report on International Religious Freedom in Singapore, 15.6 % of the Singapore population is Muslim (predominantly Sunni).
Other countries such as Saudi Arabia, and the UAE, are also expected to announce Thursday, March 23 as the first day of Ramadan 2023.
Morocco is expected to carry out the crescent moon sighting for Ramadan on the evening of Wednesday, March 22.
Many astronomers believe that Morocco will also start fasting Ramadan on March 23.
