Rabat – A deadly bus crash claimed the lives of at least 21 pilgrims and injured 29 others in Saudi Arabia on Monday, according to local media.
The bus was carrying the passengers to the holy city of Mecca to perform the Umrah pilgrimage, before it hit a bridge in the southwestern province of Asir, causing it to overturn and catch fire.
Riyadh-based TV channel Al Ekhbariya reported that the accident occurred due to an issue with the vehicle brakes, namely brake ventilation. Security and Red Crescent authorities rushed to the scene shortly after.
The victims include Saudi citizens and nationals from other countries, according to Al Arabiya. Converging reports suggested that the death toll may increase.
The injured passengers, most of whom suffered from burns, were taken to the hospital to receive medical care.
