Rabat – The Moroccan Embassy in Ouagadougou is mobilizing its resources and working in coordination with all relevant authorities to solve the case of two Moroccan cyclists, Abderrahmane Serhani and Driss Fatihi, who have gone missing near the Burkina Faso-Niger border for several days.
The Moroccan Embassy in Ouagadougou told Morocco’s news agency (MAP) that it is actively searching for the missing Moroccan bikers in close cooperation with the Burkinabe authorities to determine their location.
Serhani and Fatihi haven’t been seen or heard from since they entered Burkina Faso from Ivory Coast and headed across the border to Niger.
Serhani, a 65-year-old retired professor of Islamic education, and Fatihi, a 37-year-old shopkeeper, left Morocco on January 19. They rode their two bicycles across the Guerguerat border in the south of Morocco to Mauritania, and then from there to other African countries.
On March 29, one of the two cyclists posted a video on his Facebook page saying he was heading to Burkina Faso, a country plagued by violence since 2015 as a result of Al-Qaeda and Islamic State group attacks.
The Moroccan Embassy in Burkina Faso is in constant contact with the cyclists’ families, and has made the following phone number available to them: +22606418080.
Earlier this week, the Touring Bike Association Souss Massa called on the Foreign Affairs Ministry to intervene in the case of the two missing bikers, noting that they had been missing for more than a month.
A number of social media users shared posts and used hashtags to raise awareness about the disappearance case and solicit any support they could find online.
