Rabat – Moroccan singer Saad Lamjarred shared on Thursday pictures featuring himself, his wife, and his parents celebrating Eid Al Fitr in Paris. Lamjarred, who was sentenced to six years in prison in February on charges of aggravated rape, was granted provisional release earlier this week.

In a heartfelt message on Instagram, the Moroccan artist thanked his fans for their unconditional support and solidarity. “Glory be to God, on Eid Al-Fitr, my Lord destined me to be among my family and loved ones,” he said.

He spoke of being out of jail on provisional release, saying that he hopes he will hear good news during the appeal. “I pray to God for relief in the Court of Appeal so that I can finish this story,” he said, describing the rape case he has been embroiled in as a “test from God.”

In addition, he announced releasing on May 4 a new video on clip titled “Ach Khbarek,” meaning “How are you doing” in Moroccan Darija.

Lamjarred’s case has created widespread controversy in Morocco and divided people between supporters who pledged their solidarity with the singer, and critics who accused anyone expressing solidarity with the singer of defending a rapist.

The news of the singer’s provisional release added to the controversy, with many taking to social media to celebrate the news while others strongly condemned the court’s decision.

“It’s crazy how much you can get away with just because you’re a celebrity,” a social media user said.

Another said: “Today we live in a world where rapists are free and appreciated, clapped for and encouraged.”

Several Moroccan artists and public figures, including singer Hatim Ammor and actor Omar Lotfi, have taken to social media to congratulate Lamjarred and express their solidarity with him.

This has sparked further anger among Moroccans, who accused said celebrities of being rape apologists. “Since when congratulating a rapist became normal?” an Instagram commenter asked.
