Rabat  – Spanish security services expelled on Wednesday a man from a Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party (PSOE) event after he displayed the separatist flag of the Algerian-backed and self-proclaimed Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR).

The event, which took place in  Burgos, a city in Castile-Leon, was part of the Spanish ruling party’s pre-campaign meetings ahead of local and regional elections that are set to take place in Spain next month.

During the event, the Poliario supporter was caught on camera as he was attempting to raise the flag of the separatist Polisario Front.

Spanish guards responded by rushing to take the flag down and escorting the man out of the event.

Some of the attendees celebrated the move, with many of them calling on the Polisario Front supporter to leave the event.

Polisario is a separatist group claiming independence in Western Sahara, in defiance of Morocco’s sovereignty over the southern Moroccan region.

In March of last year, Spain angered pro-Polisario activists with its decision to endorse Morocco’s Autonomy Plan as the most serious and credible basis to end the dispute over Western Sahara.

Spain’s endorsement of the Moroccan autonomy initiative was part of its reconciliation plan after the European country caused a political row by hosting Polisario leader Brahim Ghali for hospitalization in April 2021.

The main promoter and sponsor of Polisario’s separatist agenda, the Algerian regime has remained the most vocal critic or challenger of Spain’s decision to reconcile with Morocco and unambiguously support Rabat’s stance on the Sahara dispute.

In particular, Algiers recalled its ambassador from Madrid and froze a 20-year-long friendship treaty with Spain.

Following Spain’s endorsement of the Autonomy Plan, Morocco and Spain announced the opening of a “new phase” of cooperation and a roadmap for transparency and mutual respect for each other’s territorial integrity.

The two countries held a high-level meeting in February in Morocco, which Pedro Sanchez attended with a number of senior members of his cabinet.

During the meeting, the two countries expressed their full satisfaction with the state of their bilateral ties since the one-year-long crisis caused by the Ghali incident. They especially stressed their shared commitment to strengthening relations in all fields and industries, with the Spanish PM especially welcoming the development of cooperation and bilateral relations with Morocco.
