Rabat – Brazil is supporting a political solution for Western Sahara in the Security Council and is maintaining a “legalistic and wise” position on the dispute, Morocco’s Ambassador to Brazil, Nabil Adghoghi, said on Saturday.
“Brazil, with a legalistic, wise and highly respected position, has never recognized this fictitious entity [the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic] and continues to defend a political solution in the Security Council,” Adghoghi said in a column published by Brazilian newspaper Correio Braziliense.
The diplomat added that the South American country sees the UN-brokered process as a way out of the “artificial dispute” in the region, also highlighting how the UN supports Morocco’s Autonomy Plan.

“The latest UN Security Council resolution, adopted in October 2022, reconfirmed the pre-eminence of the Autonomy Plan, considered by the international community to be serious, realistic and pragmatic,” he added, specifying that 90 countries have expressed themselves to be in favor of it to date.
Adghoghi additionally addressed Algeria’s position on the conflict, saying that it is “urgent” to convince the country’s regime to “cease its warmongering discourse, virulent stories, and provocative attitudes.”
“It is urgent that the Maghreb leaves the status quo imposed by Algeria for more than half a century with its closed land borders, forbidden airspace, negligible horizontal exchanges and non-existent human movements,” the ambassador continued.
Algeria hosts, finances, and arms the Polisario Front, a separatist movement claiming an independent state in Western Sahara.
The country also unilaterally cut its ties to Morocco in August 2021, with the territorial dispute being one of the main drivers of tensions between the two neighbors for decades.
Lately, Morocco has been gaining steam in achieving its diplomatic goals in the region, gaining support for its Autonomy Initiative, most notably from the US and Spain, as well as several African states.
