Morocco’s General Directorate of Meteorology (DMN) said that strong gusts of wind are expected to hit several provinces across the country from Tuesday to Thursday.
The weather office forecasts strong wind of 75 to 90 kilometers per hour from Tuesday 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. in the provinces of Boulemane, Midelt, Chtouka Ait Baha, Inzegane Ait Melloul, Tiznit, Tata, and Agadir Ida Ou Tanane.
Guelmim, Tan-Tan, Sidi Ifni, Assa Zag, and Taraya will experience the same weather.
Strong wind from 80 to 100 kilometers per hour will also hit the provinces of Tangier Asilah, Fahs Anjra, Tetouan, and M’diq-Fnidek from Wednesday at 1 a.m. to Thursday at 12 p.m.
Wind will also affect the provinces of Chefchaouen, Guercif, Taza, El Hajeb, Meknes, Boulemane, Moulay Yacoub, Ifrane, Khenifra, Midelt, Sefrou, Fez, Tinghir, Assa-Zag, Es-Semara, and Boujdour on Wednesday.
The weather alert comes amid concerns that high temperatures could have a negative impact on Morocco’s current agricultural season.
In the 2021-2022 season, the lack of rainfall caused a 68% drop in the country’s cereal production compared to the previous campaign.
Morocco has witnessed a bounteous rainfall season in the past few months. As drought and scorching temperatures contributed to the drop in the country’s cereal production, the recent rise in temperatures has yet again raised concerns about this year’s yield.
Just last week, a severe wave of high temperatures ranging between 38 and 41 Celsius degrees hit several provinces, including Agadir, and southern provinces such as Oued Eddahab, Laayoune, and Marrakech.
