Rabat – Usually held during summer, Rabat’s Jidar Street Art Festival will return with an eighth edition between May 18 and 28, decorating the streets of the Moroccan capital with beautiful murals during the spring season.

The festival will bring together nine artists from five countries, including the Netherlands, Spain, Mexico, Poland, and Morocco, to create nine murals, indicated the EAC-L’Boulvart association, the organizers of the event.

The participating artists include renowned street artists Telmo Miel, Sebas Velasco, Elisa Capdevilla, Bizet, Alegria del Prado, Med, Meriem Benkirane, and Machina, each with their own unique techniques and styles.

The event will feature the “Collective Wall” concept, which aims to encourage street art among Moroccans by making a large wall available for young artists and beginners to learn street art.

Applications are now open for young street artists and art students “eager” to learn about street art with the guidance of renowned artists Dynam, said the organizers. A total of 12 young artists will be selected to participate in the Collective Wall.

In addition, the festival will include several workshops in serigraphy, also known as screen printing, as well as art residencies. Jidar will also include meetings between street art enthusiasts and guided tours across the city of Rabat to discover the beautiful murals and graffiti art that adorn its building facades.

The workshop dedicated to the 12 selected aspiring artists will take place on May 24, while another open to the public workshop will be held on May 25. Meanwhile, the Jidar discussions will take place on May 25 and 26 at the Mohammed VI Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art.

Rabat, designated “African capital of culture” in 2022, is home to more than 100 murals, indicated the organizers. They noted that the festival, first launched in 2015, has greatly contributed to enriching the Moroccan capital’s vibrant cultural and artistic scene.

For centuries, Rabat has been a cultural and artistic hub for scholars, artists, and architects, creating a city that values and celebrates creativity and artistic expression.
