Peruvian Congress: Maintaining Effective, Strong Relations with Morocco Is Essential

Rabat – Maintaining “effective and strong” relations with Morocco is essential, members of the Peruvian Congress said on Monday.

In a statement to the press following a meeting with Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Nasser Bourita the delegation called on the Peruvian Minister of Foreign Affairs to rectify past “wrong” decisions and elevate the relations with Morocco to the highest levels.

The Peruvian delegation consisted of members of the “Support and Endorsement Group for the Moroccan Autonomy Initiative,” recently formed in the Peruvian Congress.

The group of Peruvian politicians affirmed today in Rabat the importance of their country maintaining “effective and strong” relations with Morocco.

Headed by Carlos Ernesto Bustamante Donayre, the delegation aims to compile a comprehensive report on the autonomy initiative in Western Sahara.

Bustamante Donayre explained that the visit aimed to assess the impact of the initiative on development, human rights, education, and health.

The findings from the evaluation will contribute to a report that will be presented to the Peruvian government and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The primary goal of the delegation is to raise awareness among Peruvian authorities about the importance of fostering relations with Morocco. By doing so, they aim to overcome the consequences of previous “wrong” decisions made by former President Castillo’s government.

Bustamante Donayre expressed hope that the document they prepare will provide the Peruvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs with compelling political arguments to strengthen the bilateral ties between Peru and Morocco to unprecedented levels.

Maria del Carmen Alva Prieto, Chair of the Foreign Affairs Committee in the Peruvian Congress, highlighted that the delegation engaged in discussions with Bourita on the current situation in Peru, particularly in light of recent disturbances in the country.

Alva Prieto stressed that one of the objectives of their visit is to ask Morocco’s government to explain the reality of Peru’s situation to other African and Arab countries, Morocco’s news agency MAP reported. She emphasized that the gesture held “significant importance” for their delegation.

During their visit to Morocco, the Peruvian parliamentary delegation, comprising members of the Peruvian-Moroccan Parliamentary Friendship Group, will hold meetings with high-ranking Moroccan officials to further strengthen the bilateral ties between the two nations.
