Rabat – Morocco has reaffirmed its commitments to Africa as Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita said the North African country is committed to strengthening institutional resilience on the continent.

Speaking during the opening of the second training cycle for African election observers, the Moroccan diplomat said that his country’s work in the African Union’s Peace and Security Council “has focused on highlighting the interdependencies between institutional resilience, stability and prosperity of Africa.”

The minister also highlighted the training cycle itself, which he is chairing alongside the African Union’s Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security Bankole Adeoye.

“This second cycle is taking place in a rather particular African context, first the context of multiple crises that Africa, like the rest of the world, is facing, security, health, political and economic crisis,” Bourita said.

He also stressed that the training cycle takes place in a year where at least 16 elections are taking place across Africa, stressing that elections on the continent are “sometimes positive” and “sometimes ambiguous.”

Bourita said that Morocco carried out several initiatives to strengthen institutional capacities at the African Union, as well as individual African states, stressing that each member state has to create its own order that is suitable to its principles and values.

The training cycle reflects the cooperation between Morocco and the African Union, he added, saying that the country had been working with Adeoye on a number of topics such as the election observer training and security and climate change issues.

Morocco is hosting the training event from May 23 to 26 as part of the country’s efforts to work with the African Union to support political governance in Africa.

Compared to the first edition, this year’s training has seen the number of participants almost double, going from 32 to 61.
