Rabat – Israel has appointed diplomat Shai Cohen as the head of the Israeli Liaison Office in Rabat, replacing Alona Fisher-Kamm who announced the end of her journey in Morocco in March.
Cohen made his first public appearance as Israel’s envoy in Morocco during the International Agriculture Exhibition (SIAM), which is taking place in Meknes between May 2 and 7.
The diplomat attended the inauguration of Israel’s first-ever pavilion at the fair alongside the Israeli Minister of Economy Nir Barkat, whose visit marked the first Israeli ministerial visit to Morocco since the inauguration of its new government.
The annual agricultural fair is one of the largest in Africa and the Middle East. This edition has brought together more than 850,000 visitors and delegations from 60 countries.
Prior to the inauguration of the Israeli pavilion, Cohen and Barkat chaired a conference titled: “Addressing Global Food and Agriculture Challenges with Israeli Innovation.”
During the conference, the new head of the Israeli Liaison Office in Rabat said that his country’s first participation at SIAM is “the reflection of the opportunities encompassed in the renewal of diplomatic relations between Morocco and Israel.”

He noted that agriculture, water management, and food security are common concerns for both countries, providing opportunities for further collaboration.
Other areas of potential collaboration between Morocco and Israel include technology and science, Cohen said, underlining his country’s readiness to share its expertise with the North African country.
Cohen previously served as Israel’s Consul General in Istanbul, as well as the representative of his country in several diplomatic missions in Europe and South America.
Since Morocco and Israel re-established diplomatic ties in December 2020, the two countries have strengthened bilateral relations in many areas, as well as announced partnerships in several sectors.
Earlier this year, the liaison office announced the launch of construction work at the site hosting the future Israeli embassy in Rabat.
