Rabat – French President Emmanuel Macron’s Popularity continues to plunge amid ongoing protests, seeking to abort the unwanted pension reforms.
The French president faced today nationwide protests marking Labor Day, with protesters determined to continue to voice their displeasure with pushing the retirement age from 62 to 64.
According to Reuters, unions aspire to see over 1 million people marching through French cities and towns on Monday to protest the pension reforms.
Many of the unions believe that May 1st will be a “milestone.”
Protesters are also unwilling to turn on the page until the pension reform is withdrawn, one of the union’s leaders Sophie Binet told Reuters.
Others have also accused Macron and his government of turning a deaf ear to their demands,
Macron has refused to back down despite nationwide protests, claiming that the pension reform is needed to “keep one of the industrialized world’s most generous pension systems in the back,” Reuters added.
For months, France has been caught in the grip of protests and strikes affecting public transportation and other crucial services.
Hundreds of thousands of French citizens have been protesting against the reforms. The protests have been brutally repressed, with many observers warning of police brutality in many major French cities.
Recent surveys indicated that the large majority of French citizens have voiced their frustration with Macron’s government, showing the president’s plunging popularity.
One of the surveys published by Le Journal du Dimanche earlier this month shows that as little as 26% of French citizens are satisfied with Macron.
The survey stressed that the data is Macron’s third “worst level” of popularity since his election in 2017, with about 47% of the survey respondents speaking of being disillusioned with the president and his policies.
