Rabat – Morocco’s place in the quarter-finals is not a surprise anymore. It is the result of years of planning, investment, and hard work. The success of Moroccan football did not happen overnight. It is the product of a clear vision that started almost two decades ago.

Today, Morocco is one of the strongest football nations in Africa. It competes with the best teams in the world. The national teams continue to achieve historic results at every level. Behind these achievements is a project that has transformed Moroccan football from the ground up.

A vision that started in 2008

The modern rise of Moroccan football began in 2008 during the national football meetings held in Skhirat. These meetings marked a turning point for the sport in Morocco.

Under the vision of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, football became a national priority. The goal was clear. Build a strong football system instead of relying on short-term success.

The strategy focused on better infrastructure, youth development, professional management, and long-term planning. Rather than searching for quick results, Morocco invested in the future.

The Mohammed VI Football Academy changed everything

One of the biggest steps in this project was the creation of the Mohammed VI Football Academy.

The academy gave talented young players the opportunity to train in world-class facilities. They received high-quality coaching, education, medical support, and modern sports science.

Many players who came through this system have gone on to play at the highest level. Their success has inspired a new generation of Moroccan footballers.

Among the best examples is Youssef En-Nesyri, who became one of Morocco’s top strikers and enjoyed successful spells in European football. Azzedine Ounahi also developed into one of the country’s brightest midfielders before moving to Europe after impressing on the international stage.

The academy continues to produce talented players every year. It has become one of the most respected football academies in Africa.

Looking beyond Morocco’s borders

Another important reason for Morocco’s success has been its ability to identify talented players born and raised abroad.

Many Moroccan families live across Europe. Their children developed in some of the world’s best football academies. Morocco worked hard to reconnect with these players and convince them to represent their country.

The national team welcomed players such as Achraf Hakimi, Brahim Diaz, Noussair Mazraoui, Sofyan Amrabat, Nayef Aguerd, and many others.

These players brought experience from Europe’s biggest clubs. At the same time, they strengthened their connection with Morocco and proudly represented the national team.

This strategy created one of the strongest squads in African football.

Fouzi Lekjaa’s leadership

No discussion about Morocco’s football success is complete without mentioning Fouzi Lekjaa.

Since becoming president of the Royal Moroccan Football Federation, Lekjaa has played a major role in implementing the country’s football strategy.

He invested in football infrastructure across Morocco. He supported youth competitions. He improved coaching standards. He also strengthened the relationship between the federation and Moroccan players living abroad.

Under his leadership, Morocco became a respected voice in African and international football. The federation also worked closely with clubs and academies to create a clear pathway for young players.

His long-term approach has helped Moroccan football continue to grow every year.

Success at every level

Morocco’s progress is not limited to the senior men’s national team.

The country has enjoyed success across many age groups and competitions.

The senior national team reached the semi-finals of the 2022 FIFA World Cup, becoming the first African and Arab nation to achieve that milestone.

The Olympic team won the bronze medal at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games after an impressive tournament.

Morocco also reached the final of the FIFA U-17 World Cup and continued to produce competitive youth teams in continental tournaments.

The women’s national team qualified for the FIFA Women’s World Cup for the first time and reached the final of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations. Morocco’s women’s clubs have also become among the strongest in Africa.

At club level, Moroccan teams continue to compete for continental titles. Wydad Casablanca, Raja Casablanca, and RS Berkane have all enjoyed major success in African competitions over the past decade.

Morocco has also become a trusted host for major international tournaments. Modern stadiums, training centres, and football facilities have strengthened the country’s global reputation. These developments also played a key role in Morocco securing the right to co-host the 2030 FIFA World Cup.

A model built for the future

Morocco’s football success is not based on luck.

It is built on planning.

It is built on investment.

It is built on youth development.

It is built on giving opportunities to talented players, whether they grow up in Morocco or abroad.

Every achievement has been another step in a long-term project that began years ago. Reaching the quarter-finals is another chapter in that story.

Morocco has shown that success comes from patience, vision, and continuous work. If the country continues on the same path, even greater achievements may still be ahead.
