Rabat – A fourth Royal Air Maroc (RAM) evacuation flight arrived from Sudan today at the Casablanca Mohammed V International Airport, carrying 125 Moroccans.
With today’s flight, the total number of Moroccan evacuees now stands at 572 to date.
A statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that the evacuation plane is the fourth of its kind to “secure the repatriation of Moroccan citizens residing in Sudan or whose presence in this brotherly country coincided with the difficult internal situation it is going through.”
The evacuation comes as part of royal instructions, with King Mohammed VI having urged the government to facilitate the return of Moroccans stranded in Sudan amid the country’s political crisis.
Sudan has been marred in intensified clashes between the country’s army and the notorious paramilitary group Rapid Support Forces. Over 800,000 people may flee to Sudan’s neighboring countries in the coming days due to the ongoing crisis.
“In consultation with all concerned governments and partners, we’ve arrived at a planning figure of 815,000 people that may flee into the seven neighboring countries,” said Raouf Mazou, UNHCR
Assistant high commissioner for refugees. Intensified clashes continue in Sudan, with both rival military forces accusing each other of violating ceasefire agreements.
At least 528 people have died while 4,599 have sustained injuries since the hostilities erupted on April.
The Sudanese armed forces have accused the paramilitary forces of infiltrating some popular neighborhoods and taking civilian hostages.
As the country grapples with the raging tensions, representatives of the Sudanese government have strongly rejected international interference in Sudan’s domestic affairs.
“We will not accept any foreign interference in our internal affairs,” Mawada Omar Hageltoam El Badawi, Sudan’s ambassador to Morocco, said last week in an interview with a Moroccan news website.
