Rabat – Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita received on Friday in Rabat ex-Malawi president Elson Bakili Muluzi, who delivered with him a letter from current president Lazarus Chakwera addressed to King Mohammed VI.
Muluzi, who visited Morocco as a special envoy of the current president, praised the relations between his country and the North African kingdom, describing them as “excellent.”
He mentioned that an ambassador will be appointed soon to Rabat, confirming what was previously announced by Malawi’s Foreign Minister Eisenhower Nduwa Mkaka in 2021, adding that he is confident of the “dynamism” in the relations between the two countries.
“Morocco, with a growing economy, enjoys strong development potential in Africa, and I consider that it is important for us to establish cooperative relations,” he said.
Since Malawi rescinded its recognition of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic, a self-proclaimed state by Polisario in Morocco’s southern provinces, relations between Lilongwe and Rabat have seen significant improvement.
Malawi was then one of the first countries to establish a general consulate in Laayoune in July 2021.
During his 2021 visit to Morocco, Mkaka asserted that the two countries will maintain traditional relations “based on mutual brotherhood.”
Bourita also stated during that visit that a joint commission would be set up between Morocco and to promote economic relations, particularly in agriculture and the academia sector.
