Rabat – Morocco continues to celebrate the continuous diplomatic gains amid growing global support for the country’s territorial integrity and sovereignty over its southern provinces in Western Sahara.
King Mohammed VI recalled the diplomatic gains in the Western Sahara dossier during his Throne Day speech on Saturday, stressing that Morocco’s seriousness and hard work have been reflected in the growing support for the country’s territorial integrity.
“Seriousness also manifests itself in the way we deal with the question of our territorial integrity,” the King said in his televised speech.
Listing the latest diplomatic gains, he recalled that Israel has been among the latest countries to recognize Morocco’s sovereignty over its southern provinces in Western Sahara.
“It is that seriousness, coupled with the legitimacy of our cause, which led to a series of decisions to recognize Morocco’s sovereignty over its southern provinces – the latest being that of the State of Israel – as well as to open consulates in Laayun and Dakhla, not to mention the growing support for the Autonomy Initiative,” the monarch said.
Last week, Morocco’s royal cabinet issued a press release to announce Israel’s decision, emphasizing that Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu also informed Rabat that his country will open a consulate in the southern Moroccan city of Dakhla.
King Mohammed VI responded to Israel’s decision, thanking Netanyahu’s government for the move and emphasizing its importance.
“Mr. Prime Minister, I would like to express to you my heartfelt thanks and my great appreciation for your letter, in which you informed me of the decision of the State of Israel to recognize the sovereignty of the Kingdom of Morocco on its Sahara,” King Mohammed VI said in his message to the Israeli PM.
He also invited Netanyahu to visit Morocco.
In addition to Israel, a growing list of countries have reiterated their support for Morocco’s cause and its Autonomy Plan – describing it as the most serious and credible basis to end the dispute over Western Sahara.
Other countries have also reflected their support through the opening of various diplomatic representations in Dakhla and Laayoune, in Morocco’s southern provinces.
