Rabat – Senegal’s government has thanked Morocco for its recent cooperation in providing healthcare for and repatriating around 50 irregular Senegalese migrants.
After a visit to Dakhla on Tuesday and Wednesday, Senegal’s Minister in charge of Senegalese abroad Annette Seck conveyed the Senegalese government’s gratitude to Morocco, according to Morocco’s Press Agency (MAP).
The visit was meant to provide support to Senegalese migrants who were awaiting repatriation, a statement from Senegal’s Foreign Ministry explained.
Having long been considered a transit country for those seeking to make it to Europe, irregular migration is one of Morocco’s most pressing issues in its cooperation with its African and European neighbors.
Recently, the country has also become a destination rather than just a transit country for many migrants coming from Sub-Saharan African countries, especially those escaping volatile security conditions and wars.
The North African country’s Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita recently reiterated Morocco’s policy towards the issue, saying the country adopts a humanitarian approach to migration.
“The Kingdom has provided concrete responses at the national, interregional, continental and multilateral levels despite several challenges,” he said.
Around 50 Senegalese nationals were repatriated on Wednesday evening by a special Senegalese Air Force flight after Morocco helped take care of the migrants’ health needs, the same source added.
The flight landed at Ouakam military airport on Wednesday, with the migrants in fragile health conditions on board.
The Senegalese government is due to present a strategy to combat irregular emigration on Thursday.
