Rabat – The Moroccan Agency for Nuclear and Radiological Safety and Security (AMSSNuR) chaired the second meeting of the Nuclear Harmonization and Standardization Initiative (NHSI), which took place at the headquarters of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Vienna.
According to a statement from AMSSNuR, the meeting was led by Director General Saïd Mouline, and it was centered around international regulatory oversight.
The NHSI meeting organized by Rafael Mariano Grossi, Director General of the IAEA, aimed to foster constructive exchanges among stakeholders from the nuclear industry and regulatory authorities.
The primary focus of the gathering was to address the latest developments in Small Modular Reactor (SMR) technologies. The meeting provided a platform to discuss recent advancements and establish a productive dialogue among experts in the field, AMSSNuR said in the statement.
Since its launch in June 2022 by the IAEA Director General, the NHSI has established a collaborative platform consisting of seven thematic working groups.
Three of these groups specifically focus on regulatory matters, such as the revision of international standards and the utilization of regulatory reviews.
AMSSNuR’s active participation in the initiative underscores its commitment to working alongside the IAEA and other competent authorities to harmonize programs and share best practices, the Moroccan agency explained in the statement.
In close partnership with the IAEA, AMSSNuR is set to organize a regional training course in Rabat from October 9, to 13, 2023. The course will concentrate on addressing the regulatory challenges associated with small modular reactors (SMRs) and will bring together participants from around 20 African countries, as well as representatives from national departments and relevant organizations.

The overarching objective of the training is to facilitate knowledge exchange and enhance regional capacities in the field of SMRs, with a specific focus on regulatory aspects, AMSSNuR said in its statement.
The statement further argues that AMSSNuR’s active engagement in the NHSI demonstrates its dedication to fostering international cooperation and ensuring the safe and responsible use of nuclear technology.
By contributing to the harmonization efforts and organizing training initiatives, AMSSNuR plays a vital role in promoting the global deployment of SMRs while prioritizing safety and security considerations, it noted.
The collaboration between AMSSNuR and the IAEA marks a significant step toward the development of sustainable and reliable energy sources worldwide.
