Rabat – Huawei, the renowned Chinese technological giant and patent holder, has announced the introduction of royalty rates for their handsets, Wi-FI, and loT patent license programs, affirming the company’s commitment to fostering sustainable development and encouraging widespread innovation.

At Huawei’s annual flagship event on innovation and intellectual property protection in Shenzhen, titled “Bridging Horizons of Innovations: Sharing IP, Driving Innovation,” the company’s Chief Legal Officer, Song Liuping, expressed Huawei’s readiness to share cutting-edge innovations with the world through patents, aiming to facilitate the common and sustainable development of industries worldwide.

The event featured informative sessions by experts from diverse domains, delving into technologies applicable in various aspects of life, including at home, on the go, and at work. These sessions covered groundbreaking research on 5.5G, audio and video technologies, innovative mobile phone features like the ten-size adjustable aperture, a cutting-edge obstacle detection network for cars, and intelligent production scheduling and optimization algorithms.

During the event, Huawei officially launched itc licensing website, offering comprehensive details about its bilateral licensing programs. This user-friendly platform offers detailed insights into the licensing process for various technologies, including mobile handsets, Wi-Fi, and cellular IoT. By providing transparent and accessible licensing information.

The giant aims to streamline the licensing process, making it easier for interested parties to navigate and engage in licensing agreements.

“Intellectual property is the great engine of cooperation in technology. It advances technology for everyone to enjoy,” remarked Randall R Rader, former Chief Judge of the United States Court of Appeal for the Federal Circuit, emphasizing the pivotal role intellectual property plays in driving technological progress and benefiting society as a whole.

Over the past two decades, Huawei has played a pivotal role in mainstream ICT standards, significantly contributing to areas such as cellular technology, WiFi, and multimedia codecs. This has allowed Huawei to announce royalty rates for its essential patents in the areas of 4G and 5G handsets, Wi-Fi 6 devices, and Internet of Things (IoT) products.

As a leading owner of standard essential patents (SEPs), Huawei has set caps for 4G and 5G handsets at US$1.5 and US$2.5 per unit, respectively. Additionally, the royalty rate for Wifi 6 consumer devices was set at US$0.5 per unit. Regarding IoT, Huawei established a rate of one percent of the net selling price, capped at US$0.75, for IoT-Centric devices, while the rate for IoT-Enhanced devices ranged from US$0.3 to US$1 per unit.

To date, Huawei has engaged in nearly 200 bilateral patent licenses and has granted licenses through patent pools to over 350 companies. Remarkably, Huawei’s total royalty payment under this license has been approximately three times its total royalty collection, with its licensing revenue in 2022 reaching US$560 million.

The company has entered into patent licenses with industry leaders such as Samsung and Oppo, as well as prominent automakers including Mercedes-Benz, Audi, BMW, Porsche, Subaru, Renault, Lamborghini, and Bentley. The company also actively advocates for and supports major global open-source industry organizations.

“Huawei takes a balanced approach to patent licensing. We believe reasonable royalty rates will incentivize both the creation and adoption of innovations,” said Alan Fan, Vice President and Head of Huawei’s intellectual property rights department. Also speaking at Huawei’s annual flagship event, Fan emphasized the importance of a positive cycle that protects, rewards, and encourages innovators to foster sustainable innovation.

Tomas Lamanauskam, Deputy Secretary-General of the International Telecommunication Union, acknowledged Huawei’s significant contribution to innovation worldwide. He emphasized the importance of conducive policies and frameworks to nurture flourishing innovation ecosystems in the pursuit of addressing global challenges and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Also addressed during the event was Huawei’s unwavering dedication to research and development (R&D). This dedication is reflected in Huawei’s cumulative investment of  $139.8 million over the past decade, the event’s participants explained. In 2022 alone, Huawei’s R&D expenditure amounted to $138.8 million accounting for 25.1% of its revenue. According to the 2022 EU Industrial R&D Investment Scoreboard, Huawie secured the fourth position worldwide.

Huawei has been at the forefront of research and development in 5.5G technology, which holds immense potential for revolutionizing the mobile industry. 5.5G is an evolution of 5G technology that enhances three key features: enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB), ultra-reliable low-latency communication (URLLC), and massive machine-type communication (mMTC). With 10 times the capabilities of 5G networks, 5.5G brings 10 Gbps into reality, enabling faster and more efficient data transmission.

The benefits and applications of 5.5G technology are vast and varied. 5.5G enables ultra-broadband capabilities and deterministic latency, revolutionizing connectivity across various sectors. This technology empowers industries to achieve green and sustainable development, aligning with the global focus on environmental conservation. The potential of 5.5G extends beyond the telecoms sector, with the ability to transform entire industries and drive digital transformation.

Huawei’s 5.5G solutions have been designed to enhance technological innovation, improve user experience, and develop new use cases in collaboration with various partners. By harnessing the power of 5.5G, businesses and individuals can unlock new possibilities and drive the future of connectivity.

The integration of AI-native technologies into 5.5G further demonstrates Huawei’s commitment to innovation and pushing the boundaries of what is possible in the mobile industry. As Huawei continues to lead in the development of 5.5G technology, the future of mobile connectivity looks promising, with endless possibilities for improved speed, reliability, and transformative applications.
