After a few weeks with moderate to hot weather, Morocco’s weather office is forecasting a new series of heatwaves with temperatures up to 47 degrees Celcius expected to hit several regions across the country.
The new heatwave will start this Saturday and will last until next Friday, the General Directorate of Meteorology announced today.
Temperatures between 37 and 43 degrees will hit the regions of Chefchaouen, Al Hoceima, Berkanem Oujda Angad, Drouich, Khenifra, Ifrane, El Hajebm and Nador on Saturday.
The same weather will be experienced in Bouleman, Guercif, Taza, and Sefrou.
From Monday to Friday next week, Tata, Assa-Zag, Taroudant, EsSmara, and within the regions of Boujdour, Oued Ed-Dahab, and Aousserd will experience a heatwave ranging between 44 and 47 degrees.
Meanwhile, temperatures between 43 and 46 degrees are expected to hit the provinces of Sidi Kacem, Guercif, Taourirt, Meknes, Fez, Taza, Moulay Yacoub, Taounate and Sidi Slimane throughout next week.
Khenisset, Beni Mellal, Fquih Ben Salah, Kouribga, Settat, Kalaa des Sraghna, Youssoufia, Chichaoua, Essaouira, Marrakech Rehamna, Agadir Ida Outanane, and Inzegane will also experience the same weather, along with Ait melloul, Tan Tan, Sidi Ifni, and Guelmim.
Temperatures ranging between 37 and 43 will hit the regions of Chefchaouen, Al Hoceima, Berkane, Oujda-Angad, Driouch, Khenifra, Ifrane, El Hajeb, Nador, Boulemane, Sefrou, Azilal, and Al haouz from Monday to Friday.
The North African country has been experiencing a series of heatwaves since June.
This dire trend across Moroccan provinces comes as EU scientists announced earlier this week that June was the world’s hottest on record.
The European Union’s Copernicus Climate Change Service suggested on Thursday that climate change effects teamed up with the “El Nino,” triggering the recent record breaking temperatures.
“This record is no surprise and a testament of climate change progressing at a worrying pace,” said Joeri Rogelj, a professor of climate science at Imperial College London’s Grantham Institute.
