Rabat – Knesset speaker Amir Ohana celebrated Israel’s recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara.
The Knesset speaker published a photo of him, showing a full Moroccan map behind.
On Monday, Morocco’s royal cabinet announced that Israel has officially recognized Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara.
The statement said that King Mohammed VI received a letter from Israeli Prime Minister Benyamin Netanyahu, who informed the monarch that Israel’s decision will be transmitted to the UN, regional and international organizations of which Israel is a member, as well as to all countries with which Israel maintains diplomatic relations.
Ohana has been one of the Israeli officials that have been advocating for the Israeli government to recognize Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara.
“As a native of this land [Morocco], I openly declare that Israel must recognize the Moroccanness of the Sahara,” Ohana said during his visit to Morocco last month.
Many have also celebrated Israel’s decision, including former US Ambassador David Fischer.
On Monday, the former ambassador said: “Today is the day… When I signed the map, I knew the day would come to celebrate HM King Mohammed VI receiving a letter from Prime Minister Netanyahu, recognizing the sovereignty of Morocco over the territory of Western Sahara. Today is that day!,” he concluded.
Former Japanese ambassador Takashi Shinozuk also celebrated Israel’s decision today, stressing that this move reflects the “great foresight” of King Mohammed VI.
“I was very impressed by this new development which once again demonstrates the great foresight of His Majesty King Mohammed VI,” he said, stressing Morocco’s role in favor of peace in the Middle East.
