Rabat – Russia’s President Vladimir Putin has underlined his strong commitment to bolstering ties with Morocco, expressing a desire to strengthen the bilateral relation King Mohammed VI initiated during his visit to the East European country in 2016.
Putin made the remarks on Friday during the 2nd Russia-Africa Summit held in St. Petersburg, Russia, addressing a gathering of African leaders.
During his speech, the Russian President emphasized Morocco and Russia’s shared goal of ensuring global food security, lauding the “significant measures” King Mohammed VI took to alleviate global tensions related to food products.
For his part, the Head of the Moroccan Government Aziz Akhannouch, who represented Morocco and the King at the summit, praised the distinguished diplomatic history between Russia and Morocco, dating back to the 18th century.
In addition, Akhannouch celebrated the progress made in recent years after the monarch’s visit to Russia in 2016, saying it gave birth to a “deep strategic partnership,” encompassing a broad spectrum of areas of cooperation, including agriculture, energy, fisheries, science, technology, culture, and higher education.

The Head of Government also acknowledged that the 2nd Russia-Africa Summit occurred in a “turbulent and unclear” international context, marked by instability and escalating conflicts and tensions in several regions worldwide.
Amid these circumstances, Akhannouch emphasized the principles guiding Morocco’s position concerning current crises. This includes respect for the territorial integrity of United Nations member states, adherence to international law principles and resolutions of the Security Council and General Assembly, and promoting peaceful means to resolve disputes.
In light of the challenges posed by the Ukrainian crisis in terms of food and energy security, particularly on the African continent, Akhannouch said that Morocco “believes in the need to intensify efforts and encourage international and regional cooperation” to overcome these challenges.
