Rabat – FIFA President Gianni Infantino celebrated Moroccan footballer Nouhaila Benzina for becoming the first player to wear a hijab during the Women’s World Cup, hailing the event as a testament to the sport’s core values of inclusivity and diversity.

“Nouhaila Benzina became the first player yesterday to wear the hijab at a FIFA Women’s World Cup match. Football is inclusive, tolerant, universal, and diverse,” Infantino wrote on Instagram.

Amidst Benzna’s historic moment, the Moroccan national team is also making its mark in the 2023 Women’s World Cup, which marks Morocco’s debut participation in the sporting event.

In addition, the Atlas Lioness celebrated their first-ever win at the tournament after beating 1-0  in a thrilling game.

While some French media outlets and commentators have raised questions and made controversial and Islamophobic remarks about Benzina’s hijab, FIFA’s stance underlined the importance of respecting each athlete’s personal choices and cultural background.

In addition, the wider football community celebrated the representation of hijab-wearing players on the global stage.

The Moroccan player made headlines in recent days, with international media and internet users arguing that Benzina has the potential to inspire many people and encourage future generations of athletes to pursue their dreams, regardless of any perceived limitations.

“Wonderful to see Nouhaila Benzina become the first player to wear a Hijab at the Women’s World Cup. The Morocco defender will give inspiration to millions of young girls,” said sports outlet Fare.

Meanwhile, sports outlet ESPN FC said that “this tournament continues to inspire and break boundaries for future generations,” referring to Benzina wearing hijab.

The Ambassador of Morocco to Ghana Imane Ouadil described the Moroccan defender as a “true inspiration for the many Muslim girls and women in the world.”
