Morocco’s Moulay Idris Zerhoun Ranked As World’s Seventh Most Beautiful Village

Rabat – The Moroccan village of Moulay Idriss Zerhoun has secured a spot in the list of the world’s most beautiful villages. Renowned travel  platform “Architectural Digest magazine” recognized the enchanting architecture, including the Sentissi Mosque, elevating Morocco’s appeal to new heights.

The ranking highlights the beauty of the 13  most captivating villages across the globe.

Taking the coveted first position is the Orta San Giulio in Italy, followed by Frigiliana in Spain. Securing the seventh spot, the Moroccan village of Moulay Idriss Zerhoun is particularly hailed for its stunning examples of Islamic architecture, including the Sentissi Mosque, which features a cylindrical minaret—the only one in Morocco—covered in a green and white zellige tile mosaic that spells out a surah from the Koran.

“Extending over two hillsides at the bottom of Mount Zerhoun, this holy destination houses one of the country’s most significant sites, the mausoleum of ruler Idris I. It also has many stairs, alleyways, and terraces for a bird’s-eye view of everything,” it added.

Located 60 kilometers west of Fez and five kilometers away from the Amazigh (Berber) and Roman remains of Volubilis,  Moulay Idriss Zerhoun is famous for being Morocco’s spiritual capital.

The village has a far-stretching history as it was founded in the 8th century. It also holds spiritual significance: Every year, thousands of Moroccans visit the village to commemorate its founder.

This is not the first time that the Moroccan village has been celebrated on the world stage.

Earlier this year, in March, the magazine Travel + Leisure featured Moulay Idriss Zerhoun among the world’s best villages, saying that the historical and spiritually significant Moroccan village “deserves attention.”

Such consistent, remarkable recognition of Moulay Idriss Zerhoun solidifies Morocco’s place among the world’s most captivating tourist destinations.

In addition, the village’s local community’s genuine hospitality and cultural integration enhance its appeal to both Moroccan and foreign visitors, ensuring that visitors have an immersive and unforgettable experience in this unparalleled corner of the world.
