Morocco Urges African Union to Enhance Cyberspace Governance

Rabat – Morocco called on the African Union’s (AU) Peace and Security Council to improve the continent’s cyberspace governance, and to respect international law in the field.

The Moroccan delegation made the comments at a council meeting held via video conference, calling for the establishment of a legal architecture for cyberspace and new regulations.

The regulations should secure each country’s information system, as well as those implemented on the regional, continental, and international levels, the delegation added.

They especially stressed the importance of cyber-sovereignty, the prohibition of interference in state affairs, and respect for international humanitarian law as key pillars of guaranteeing cyberspace governance, among others.

The speakers also pointed to the efforts made by Morocco itself in establishing mechanisms to protect and defend information systems, and to raise awareness in the private sector on cybersecurity risks.

The delegation also explained that Morocco has been implementing a legislative and regulatory framework since 2003 to monitor cyber activities and ensure the security of citizens and infrastructures online.

They continued by explaining that Morocco considers international cooperation essential to meet the challenges of cybersecurity, and stressed the role of the United Nations in facilitating cooperation and establishing a common understanding of the issues.

Morocco has been intensifying its cybersecurity efforts lately, on the national, regional, and international levels.

Recently, Casablanca held the third annual pan-African Emec Expo, which included the African Cybersecurity Summit, bringing together digital stakeholders to promote new technologies and dialogue surrounding cybersecurity.

The summit featured professionals from Morocco, Germany, and Israel, and aimed to serve as an important step to protect African actors from cyberattacks.
