Rabat – In light of the emergence of the new COVID-19 mutantion “EG.5.1” in various parts of the world, Moroccan health authorities have implemented a series of precautionary measures to counter the potential threat posed by this variant. The Ministry of Health and Social Protection has reactivated digital and integrated vaccination centers to encourage vaccination against the evolving strain, emphasizing its critical role in protecting citizens from infection, Morocco state media reported.
The “EG.5.1” variant is a part of the Omicron lineage that has been rapidly spreading in numerous countries, including parts of Asia, North America, and Europe. Health experts have noted that this variant is characterized by constant changes, making it capable of evading immunity.
Professor Said El Moutawakel, a member of the Scientific and Technical Committee to Combat COVID-19, highlighted that this new variant shares similar risks with the Omicron variants and has contributed to a notable 35 percent increase in infections due to its rapid transmission.
Symptoms associated with the “EG.5.1” variant remain consistent with common COVID-19 symptoms, such as feeling unwell, fever, sore throat, and runny nose. So far, no severe symptoms have been reported. The World Health Organization has noted an increase in prevalence, growth advantage, and immune escape characteristics in this variant but hasn’t identified changes in disease severity.

While Morocco has yet to report any cases of the “EG.5.1” variant, the Ministry of Health and Social Protection remains vigilant, acknowledging the potential for its spread within the country. The Ministry urges citizens to complete their vaccination doses to bolster immunity against COVID-19 and its variants.
To boost accessibility to vaccinations, the Ministry has reopened integrated mobile vaccination centers, including the Casa Anfa digital vaccination center near the Hassan II Mosque in Casablanca. Dr. Mohamed Benazzouz, responsible for the National Immunization Program, stressed the importance of receiving booster doses, especially for high-risk individuals. These centers stand ready to serve citizens seeking to reinforce their immunity.
Although Morocco’s epidemiological situation remains stable, the Ministry of Health and Social Protection, in collaboration with the Scientific Committee for COVID-19, continues to assess the risks associated with the “EG.5.1” variant. The National Center for Public Health Emergency Operations is maintaining continuous vigilance and readiness.
Experts reassured the public that Morocco’s approved vaccination program is effective against the “EG.5.1” variant. They underscored the importance of adhering to full vaccination and preventive measures to mitigate risks. Dr. Saeed Afif encouraged those exhibiting COVID-19 symptoms to undergo testing and emphasized the role of full vaccination in protecting vulnerable populations.
