Rabat – Today, Morocco commemorates the 44th anniversary of the recovery of Oued Eddahab, a historical milestone that reflects the country’s resilience and dedication to safeguarding its territorial integrity.
Marked by nationwide events and reflections, the celebration honors the perseverance and sacrifices that have shaped Morocco’s identity.
Oued Eddahab, meaning “The Gold River” in Arabic, holds profound historical significance for Morocco. Located in the southern regions of the country, this region was reclaimed by Morocco on August 14, 1979, after a period of colonial occupation.
The recovery of Oued Eddahab not only restored Moroccan sovereignty over its land but also demonstrated the country’s resilience and commitment to asserting its place on the global stage.
A testimony to national resilience
As Morocco celebrates this important anniversary, the nation reflects on the journey that led to the recovery of Oued Eddahab. Years of diplomatic negotiations, coupled with the unyielding determination of the Moroccan people, culminated in the return of the region to Moroccan control.
Following Morocco’s independence in 1956, the issue of its territorial integrity emerged as a central concern.
Spain’s intentions in the Sahara prompted the late King Hassan II to assert his country’s historical and legal claims over the territory.
In 1975, King Hassan II organized the Green March, a massive peaceful demonstration of Moroccans who marched into the Sahara to assert their country’s territorial claim. The event marked a turning point in negotiations, putting pressure on Spain to engage in talks.
A year later, Spain agreed to hold a referendum to determine the future of the region, but the process was delayed due to disagreements over voter eligibility and territorial boundaries.
Reclaiming sovereignty
In a historic move, the Sahrawi tribal leaders of Oued Eddahab went to the Royal Palace in Rabat on August 14, 1979, to pledge allegiance to King Hassan II, expressing their desire to be part of the Moroccan nation.
During the occasion, the late king delivered an address saying, “We have just received, on this blessed day, your oath of allegiance, which We will preserve and keep preciously, as a sacred deposit.”
“From now on, you must honor this oath. On our part, we also make it our duty to guarantee your defense and security and to work tirelessly for your welfare. So, My dear sons, welcome to your homeland,” King Hassan II added.
The achievement stands as a testament to the nation’s ability to overcome challenges through unity, diplomacy, and peaceful means.
Since then, the country has been working tirelessly to improve the socio-economic standards of its southern regions.
