Rabat – Morocco’s tourism hub Marrakech was hit yesterday by a sandstorm that plunged the city into chaos.
The otherwise vibrant city was shrouded in darkness as the sandstorm swept through, obscuring the sky and leaving a trail of destruction in its wake, videos shared by social media users show.
According to the General Directorate of Meteorology (DGM), the sandstorm was accompanied by ferocious gusts of wind that reached a high speed of 80 kilometers per hour.
These powerful winds cause significant material damage to trees, buildings, and infrastructure.
Local media reports further indicate that the storm claimed the life of a man near Jemaa El Fna square.
“An 18-year-old young man lost his life after a tree fell on him in the Belk Street area near Jemaa el-Fna Square,” a local media report explains.
The victim, whose identity has not been officially released, was crushed by a falling tree. Another individual narrowly survived being crushed.
“Another man was seriously injured at Bab Al-Futuh in Jemaa el-Fna Square. A massive wheel fell on him due to the strong winds,” the report adds.
