Rabat – Morocco’s Food Safety Office (ONSSA) has ordered the withdrawal of all watermelon products from a Marjane supermarket in the city of Agadir due to toxic and harmful substances.

ONSSA announced the news in a circular, calling on the director of Marjane Founty Agadir to remove all batches of watermelons displayed on the shelves of the supermarket.

Examinations conducted on samples of the watermelons showed the presence of toxic and harmful substances, which make the products unfit for consumption.

Further analysis will be carried out on other samples to ensure the quality of watermelon offered for sale. Watermelons are one of the most consumed seasonal fruit across Morocco during the summer season.

The news came a month after 60 people suffered from food poisoning due to seasonal fruits in Sidi Bennour, a city 174 kilometers away from Casablanca.

Local authorities, however, did not reveal the nature of the seasonal fruit consumed by the victims.

Raw fruits and vegetables can be subject to harmful germs.

The majority of food safety authorities warn against any potential eating of unwashed fresh produce.

Fresh fruits and other produce can also be easily exposed to germs if the peel or skin of products are damaged or bruised.
