Rabat – Morocco’s General Delegation for Prison Administration and Rehabilitation is calling on both judicial and administrative authorities to take effective measures to alleviate the critical issue of overcrowding within the country’s prison facilities.
The Delegation underscored the gravity of the matter in a statement on Tuesday, stating: “With profound apprehension over the alarming surge in the prison population, we implore the relevant authorities to expedite the formulation of effective strategies to combat the pressing concern of prison overcrowding.”
The solutions are “essential to forestall potential security disruptions, while also tackling the pressing challenges tied to accommodation, nutrition, healthcare, and the successful execution of rehabilitation programs for reintegration.”
The statement further disclosed that, as of August 7, 2023, the total number of incarcerated individuals within prison facilities soared to a staggering 104,000, which is a record-breaking figure.
The surge persists despite the current prison capacity being capped at a mere 64,600 beds. The data highlight the continuous efforts exerted by the General Delegation to modernize and expand prison infrastructure across Morocco.
Illustrating the overcrowding issue in Moroccan prisons, the prison administration recalls that at the Ain Sebaa Local Prison in Casablanca, inmate numbers have reached a substantial 10,877, surpassing the facility’s capacity of 3,800 beds.
The administration warns that unless “prompt and requisite measures are taken to address this situation, the prison population is projected to sustain its upward trajectory, mirroring the ongoing pace of arrests and investigations.”
