Rabat – Moroccan athlete Soufiane El Bakkali has secured his spot in the final of the men’s 3,000m steeplechase at the 19th World Athletics Championships.
The athletics championship, takes place in Budapest, Hungary, from August 19 to 27.
On Saturday, the Olympic champion competed in the second heat of the 3,000 meters steeplechase.
During the race, El Bakkali delivered an outstanding performance, finishing second in his heat with a time of 8 minutes, 23.66 seconds, scoring the same time as American athlete Kenneth Rooks, who finished first in the heat.
Tunisian athlete Mohamed Amin Jhinaoui secured the third position in the competition, with a time of 8 minutes, 24.20 seconds. The three athletes have all advanced to the final stage, where they will compete for the prestigious title.
Since September 2021, El Bakkali has maintained a remarkable winning streak. In May, El Bakkali marked a significant achievement by securing the title of World’s Best Performance (WBP) of the year.
With an impressive time of 7 minutes and 56.68 milliseconds, El Bakkali not only surpassed his own record from the previous year but has also become the eighth-best performer in the event’s storied history.
El Bakkali’s recent feat adds to his already illustrious track record. In July 2022, he claimed the prestigious title of world champion in the 3000 meter steeplechase at the World Athletics Championship.
In 2021, El Bakkali became the first Moroccan athlete to secure a gold medal in the 3000m steeplechase at the Olympic Games in Tokyo.
